Since becoming a Founding Independent Specialist for EVER, Alicia has never looked better—and never looked back. A graduate of Duke Business School, Alicia Gempel always imagined starting her own business. “I was constantly coming up with new ideas and writing business plans, but when it came down to it, the process was daunting and doing it all on my own was overwhelming,” says the Columbus, Ohio-based mother to three boys.
After business school, she forged a career working for a well-known, multi billion-dollar beauty company doing brand strategy, development and web merchandising. But once she had her first son, she dreamed of having more flexibility and independence. “I watched as one of my sister’s best friends excelled with Stella & Dot as an Independent Stylist, so when I heard about the launch of EVER, it was a no-brainer for me,” she confides. “I loved how the brand was positioned, and was intrigued by being in on the ground floor. I never thought I would be in ‘sales’ but it turns out selling this brand has been a blast. I’ve loved reconnecting with old friends and making new ones."
We sat down with Alicia to get the inside scoop on her success…
What inspired you to become an EVER Independent Specialist?
I was one of the first people to sign up as an Independent Specialist while the website was still in beta, so the timing of the opportunity was amazing. Being one of the first Specialists is not only an honor, but an enormous opportunity. I love seeing the growth and knowing that we are creating an amazing and supportive culture of smart, motivated women—women who want more out of life on their terms. And we’re just getting started!
Can you tell us a little bit about your new-found financial freedom?
I’ve made around $6,000 in commissions in my best month, and I manage to fit that into my busy role as a mom. I’m still here for my kids’ big life events and school parties, and here for them when they are sick, etc. (To be honest, there are times EVER feels a little bit like a release or ‘break’ from the craziness of momhood). I can now afford purchases that are for me, my home and my family that would otherwise seem frivolous. I’ve been waiting to renovate my kitchen for more than 5 years and this past Fall it was finally complete with help from my commissions earned from EVER product sales. When my husband sees me bring home a new purchase he jokes, “Did EVER buy that?” Since the answer is always yes, he is thrilled!*
Has anything else changed in your life because of EVER?
It’s been a total transformation. It’s not just about what shows on the outside or how radiant your skin suddenly looks when you start using the products, but what you feel on the inside. My skin is the best it has ever looked, but more important, I feel more confident now. Even my husband has noticed my boost in confidence since I have become a Specialist. Feeling like a leader and helping other women has brought out the best in me.
What’s it like selling skincare after having a career in marketing?
The transition felt pretty effortless and the tools provided for you made it so easy. EVER products are both effective and good-for-you, which was very exciting to me. You can feel good about what you have to offer people. Because the products are formulated without many ingredients that are known to be harmful, , there’s no question about what may or may not be in them, so more sacrificing health for beauty! I love sampling out my products because the results are so transformative. I believed in this line from the start, which makes it easy to sell, and women absolutely love it—the feel of it, the luxuriant texture, the changes they see in their skin. When my clients find out about the ingredients that go into most mainstream skincare and how little regulation there really is, they’re amazed that a product so pure can be so powerful. I love being the one to introduce them to their new obsession!
What would you tell other women who are thinking of following in your footsteps?
When you decide to be a stay-at-home mom after having a high-earning, fast-paced job, you can’t help but feel like you lose a little piece of your sense of self. Giving up the income is tough too. At first I became a Specialist to make extra money as I stayed at home, but now the business has taken off and it’s actually begun to supplement my prior income.* That’s so empowering.
Which EVER product is your all-time, can’t-live-without favorite?
